There is this interesting idea that suggests you “steer where you stare.” For example, when you drive and you begin to stare too long away from the road, your car starts to steer in that direction. This has actually happened to me a couple of times. Now this idea makes sense when it comes to driving. But I believe it’s true when it comes to other areas of our life as well. If we stare in one direction too long, we begin to steer that way.
So the question is, where are you staring and what are you steering towards? And most importantly, what kind of person are you becoming as a result?
Meditating on God’s Character
The theme of this month’s prayer calendar is all about steering our minds towards God’s Character. The Prayer Calendar is part prayer, part Bible Study, and part self-improvement.
If you use it for prayer, you can say it aloud or quietly to yourself throughout the day. It can be like self-talk or an internal dialogue. As a Bible study, you can use it as a topical study throughout the month and read the passages surrounding the verse to get a better context. As self-improvement, you can use it to practice better mental hygiene by directing your thoughts toward the revealed truth for that day.
However you choose to use it, it’s likely to bless you as you meditate each day on verses that illuminate God’s character.
Here are a few ideas to guide you in the process.
Let the thought sink in
Ask God to reveal a simple or profound truth about God’s character for the day. If the prayer on the prayer calendar is about Jesus giving abundant life, ask questions. What does it mean to have an abundant life? How can I receive it? What does it look like? You get the idea. Questions deepen the thoughts in your mind.
Remove barriers
There may be days when you sense something blocking you from hearing God’s voice and receiving a blessing. Do you allow your mind to wander too much? Are you distracted with daily tasks? If so, ask God to search your heart to remove any barriers that may be keeping you from hearing a clear word from Him.
Remember to Remember
Sometimes when we learn something we tend to quickly forget. Whatever the idea that comes to your mind, remember to remember. Once you do that, allow it to bring change in your day.
Thank Him
However God speaks or whatever peace of mind you receive as a result of the prayer, thank God for it.
Here is a powerful verse to keep in mind as you read through the calendar. The message speaks for itself:
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
(Philippians 4:8)
